Book Review: A Generous Orthodoxy Part 4 of ??
Chapter 0
This chapter didn't make a lot of sense to me, basically McLaren pretends to try to talk people out of reading the book. He did say a few things that are probably helpful for understanding the rest of the book though. McLaren says that:
- He upholds the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds
- Scripture remains above the creeds
- Orthodoxy is useful as far as it produces orthopraxy (correct practice).
- Due to his upbringing, he is unfairly critical of conservative Protestants
- He is seeking something beyond both absolutism and relativism
- He hopes no one will use the ideas in the book in a divisive way

I imagine I've heard similar things in my travels among the relevant and emerging world a number of times now. I think we forget that God and our spiritual ancestors has been walking on these paths much longer than we have. As a result we say, "this might be too much for you traditional folk" far too often.
Sometime soon I'll be posting about a book I'm reading from a Navigators president in 93 that is basically presenting emergent thoughts to the modernist. There are more relevant and emergent folks out there than wear the name.
Good point.
That sounds like an interesting book.
