NBA Finals Postmortem

The Heat defend Dirk a lot better than I expected. The Mavericks defended Shaq better than I thought they would. They defended Wade about like I thought they would except for all the free throws. Superstars get the calls when the drive to the basket I guess.

By game 6 Dirk was passing out of double teams instead of driving to the hoop, so he didn't get the calls when he was bumped. He should have chucked up wild shots instead of passing whenever he was bumped and he probably would have gotten the calls. An effective strategy, but it's ugly basketball.

BTW, Wade was fouled on that game deciding drive in game 5. He did push off on Terry and grab Howard's shorts first though

The bottom line is that the Mavs chocked game 3 away (I think they got over-confident), didn't show up for game 4, lost a tough game 5 without Stackhouse and all the calls going against them (which is bound to happen in at least one game a series), and were outplayed in game 6. With their season on the line, the Mavs resorted to chucking up 3-pointers, and that wasn't what got them past the Spurs.

So the Heat are the champions.

Wade was amazing, he's the closest thing to the next Michael Jordan currently in the NBA... stay tuned, cause LeBron might take back that title soon enough. The Mavs tried too hard to guard Wade out top and draw charges rather than hang back, force him to shoot 3's and don't let him drive and get fouled. That foul called on Dirk in the last minute of game 6 was a foul, even though the announcers and Dirk thought differently; Dirk put out his arm to hold up Wade, foul every time. Meanwhile, the Mavs didn't have any go-to player in game 6, so like you said, they just threw up 3's, which is obviously not their game.

As for Stackhouse, he deserved to be suspended at least one game after completely tackling Shaq. He just threw his shoulder into him and didn't bother to even attempt at hitting the ball. Should have been an immediate ejection in that game as well. Shaq could very easily have been badly hurt falling like that.

Rachel's comment today: "Now that the Mavs are out of the way, we can concentrate on the Rangers."
